Words (poem) by Nancy Lynch for IX std

Things to ponder

What words can do?
What makes you write?
What is the power of words?

When you write something on your own, don't you write what's on your mind?
Writing is also an outlet for your pent up emotions. It is a source of free expression.
After writing your thoughts don't we feel like a burden is lifted from your heart?
We feel relieved inside. Words can pen our feelings and emotions. They give us the sense of well being.Words are symbols of knowledge and aesthetic enjoyment.

Words by Nancy Lynch

A word is such a lovely thing.
It builds a song, for words can sing
And words can swiftly through the sky
On shining wings, for words can fly.

They paint the autumn's flame and gold
With colors fadeless, proud and bold,
They paint the depth of trust that lies
Within a dog's adoring eyes.

They bring the thrill of spray and foam
To sailing hearts, who stay at home
The moon lies hidden by a hill-
Words lay it on my window sill.

Oh, words can talk across the years
Beyond the miles - above the fears-
Down countless ages march and sing-
A word is such a lovely thing!

Explanation of the poem stanza by stanza

Words are a window to a world of imagination and personal growth. Through words we could write poetry and pen a song. Words have no boundary . The sky is the limit for expressing one's thoughts. It can take us to a higher plane of intellectual thinking. We can sour higher in our fantasy like the shining wings of a bird flies into a spiritual bliss. Just like the mind, words are free. In this stanza the shining wings is a metaphorical way of describing the power of words to lift our imagination. A metaphor is a representation of two unlike things that have something important in common.

The power of words can colour our imagination. They can paint Autumn's bright yellow and golden flame which can be interpreted as the fiery, proud and bold expression of power. Words can paint trust and faith without speech. They can relate our feelings like the kind and adoring eyes of dogs. Dog's don't talk our language but they speak through their loving eyes.

We can travel anywhere sitting in our room writing at our desk. Words have the power to kindle our creativity of thought. We can fulfill your dreams. We could sail different lands. We can feel the thrill or excitement without actually traveling. We can feel the spray and foams of the sea without the actual experience of surfing on a boat. Even if the moon does not come out or is hidden behind a hill, we can conceptualize it in our mind's eye at our window pane through the power of words.

Words can talk and express everlasting feelings. We could write our hearts out without any inhibitions or fear. They remain inscribed in the sands of time and in our hearts forever. They are immortal and exist ages after ages. Words don't fade. They are timeless and limitless . Words are such a beautiful and powerful form of expression.

In this poem there are several images called imageries. Imageries create mental images in our minds easily. They can be easily imagined. Kinesthetic imagery can be felt and touched in our mindand visual imagery can be visualized or seen in our mind. Shinning wings, autumn's flame, dog's adoring eyes, moon are visual imageries. Spray and foam are Kinesthetic imageries.
