Enter Grandmother.

Grandmother (Enters): Tanvi  O Tanvi ! Where are you? Please hurry! We have so many things to do.

Mother (Enters): Oh Mother I am right here! I will just water the plants and come.

Grandmother: All right put the pot inside and go and wake the children! I will get ready for puja.

The mother enters a room where the Granddaughter is sleeping.

Mother: Oh God help me!

Mother leaves the room and meets the Grandmother

Grandmother: Are the children ready? Their Grandfather is coming now. Get everyone for puja!

Mother: The children won’t wake up. I have given up! I don’t know what to do!

Grandmother: Wait I will bring their Grandfather! He will know what to do!

Mother and Grandmother exit the stage

In the bedroom grandson peeks through the door

Grandson: Ha! No one is watching me now! I can play my favorite game. Cricket!

Narrator: Look what is happening here! This side grandson is playing cricket and that side the granddaughter is watching TV.

 The Grandfather enters Grandson’s room.

Grandfather: What are you doing here? Why are you playing cricket at this time?

Grandson: Grandpa don’t be upset! I want to become a cricketer like our Sachin Tendulkar and win the Bharatratna!

Grandfather: Ah- ha! You want to win the Bharatratna? Do you know what is the meaning of Bharatratna?

Grandson: Grandpa I can answer any question you ask about cricket.  I can’t answer this question. Can you please tell me the meaning of Bharatratna?

Grandfather: Of course I will tell you. Come with me.

In the other room grandmother goes to wake Samprita.

The Grandmother enters the granddaughter’s room

Grandmother: Samprita! Samprita ! Why are you watching cartoons on T.V at this time of the day?

Granddaughter:  Grandma! I am watching Chota Bheem! I like it very much. Do you know Chota Bheem?

Grandmother: Yes! Do you know the real story of Bheem? Your Grandfather will tell you nicely. Come with me.

Granddaughter: Yes Grandma! I am interested to know more about Bheem from Grandpa!

Now Grandmother and Granddaughter join the Grandfather and grandson .

Grandson: Grandpa, can you tell me the meaning of Bharatratna?

Grandfather: Joel, Bharat is the oldest name of our country India and Ratna means treasure.  Sachin Tendulkar is one such great treasures of India.

Grandson: But Grandpa how can Sachin Tendulkar become a treasure of India?

Grandfather: Joel doesn’t treasure mean a valuable thing? Sachin is a valuable sport person of India. He is a great treasure for India and that is why he won the Bharatratna award. One day I want to see you get it Joel!

Grandson: Sure Grandpa!

Grandmother: Do you know there are two great epics of Bharath? One is Ramayana and the other is Mahabharata. I will tell you the story of Mahabharata. Mahabharata means Great Bharatha.

Granddaughter: Grandpa I want to know about Bheem!

Grandfather: Wait Samprita! I will tell you the story of Bheem! He was one of the five great ratnas of old Mahabharata! They were the five Pandavas.
But first, You should know who wrote Mahabharata. It was Lord Ganesha! Now let’s begin the Ganeshstuti

Grandfather, Grandmother and grandchildren pray To Lord Ganesha .

Narrator: Now the Ganeshstuti dance form is presented to invoke Lord Ganesha!

Sloka: GEETHA SANGEETA KARTAVYA KIMANYE SHASTRA VISTHATHYAA YASVAYAM PADMA NABHYASYA MUKHA PADMADVISHIISRUTHAHA

The Grandfather narrates to the grandchildren, how Lord Ganesha became the writer of the great epic Mahabharata.

Grandfather: One fine day when Lord Ganesha was sitting in the Himalayas. Vyasa approached him.

Lord Ganesha and Vedvyasa are spotlighted

Sage Vedvyasa (Bows to Lord Ganesha): Lord Ganesha. Please accept my pranam!

Lord Ganesha (blesses Sage Vedvyasa):  I am delighted to see you! I will grant you any wish you ask for!

Sage Vedvyasa:   Lord Ganesha, kindly accept my request to write for me the story of Mahabharata in Shloka form when I chant it. This is my only wish!

Lord Ganesha: Tathastu! I will write for you on one condition!  You will have to chant as fast as I write!

Sage Vedvyasa: Definitely my lord! But I request you to understand the meaning first and then write.

Lord Ganesha: Tathastu!

Grandmother and Grandfather enter with the grandchildren.

Grandmother: Do you understand children! When we start any work we must first find its purpose or meaning. Only then we can do it honestly with the right attitude and be successful in it.

Narrator:  The Mahabharata covers every aspect of human life.   It covers the human flaws, highlights follies of the great and good of society.  It exposes the purpose of life, ideas of universal love and unconditional forgiveness.   It projects the bigger picture so you can rise above the pettiness and complexities of human life. Discover it as I unfold the pages from Mahabharata.

Modern Mahabharata in Minutes

Scene 1

Five children came running inside a gate of a cottage along with their mother Kanti (Kunti). The children’s aunt had been waiting outside a wooden door of the cottage.

“Welcome to Kuru! Hello all of you. It is lovely to see you.” said Aunt Sugandha (Gandhari)

The children and Aunt greet each other.

“Hello Aunt Sugandhi!” said the children.

“Hello Sugandhi it is good to see you too!”said the children’s mother Kanti.

“Where is Kaurav?”asked Akul looking around for his unknown cousin.

“Oh naughty Gaurav ! I told him to wait for you!”Said his aunt “Now he has gone off somewhere. I must tell you, children, you may find him a bit difficult at first- he has always been on his own, you know, and at first may not like you being here. But you must not take any notice of that- he will be all right in a short time. I am very glad that you have come to live with us.”

Enter Uncle Sudhir (Dhitarashtra)

Their uncle Sudhir suddenly appeared. He was a blind man with a fierce frown on his forehead. He looked at the children and nodded his head.

 “Where is Gaurav?” Dhitarashtra asked.

“Gone off somewhere again” said Aunt Sugandha,

They all enter the house through the door and exit stage

Scene 2

Inside the house

“Hello Gaurav!  I am Dev” Said Dev (Sahadev)

Gaurav frowned hard at Dev and replied” I don’t like you! I didn’t want any of you to come to my home. It belongs to me! At least it will belong to me someday. It will be my very own.  You are interfering with my life here! I am quite happy on my own. Now I have to put up with silly boys like you!”

Dev felt offended “You are not very polite. If you are going to be nasty to us you won’t find that my brothers will take much notice of you!”

“Well who cares”  Gaurav flung open the door and marched out with his head held high and stopped suddenly as  the other four children enter.

They all called together. “Cousin Gaurav” and look at one another in surprise.

“Gaurav won’t answer if you call him. He didn’t want us to come because we will interfere with his life here.  He laughed at me, and was very rude.” Said Dev

Udi puts his arm around Dev and said. “Cheer up! You have got us to stand for you.”

Scene 3

Inside the house

“Don’t look like that Gaurav! “ Said Sugandhi “I hope you have made friends already. You must take your cousins to the places around the house. It would be fun for you to play in the garden. You must take them there.”

“But I don’t want mother!” said Gaurav his face dark and sulky. “You know you said it is my house. It is my land. You said it could be mine. You did, you did!”

“I know Gaurav dear. But you really must be sensible. It won’t hurt to share. You all will have an equal share “

“Father Father! You know you said I could have them. You know you promised. I believed you! “Said Gaurav and he exited the stage in rage.

“Gaurav! Listen ……….!” Said Sudhir

Everyone exit the stage.

Scene 4

In the garden

“Come play with us Gaurav in the garden!” said Udi

“I won’t play with you. Get out of here!” Said Gaurav

“You do what you want to” said Arjun. “We don’t want to interfere with you, you know. We have got ourselves for company, and if you don’t want to be with us, you needn’t”

“But we did like you, all the same, if you would like to be with us” said Udi generously.

“No thanks! I won’t play or share my garden with you!” said Gaurav

“Don’t be silly Gaurav. It isn’t really yours. You know that. What is yours is ours too! The land rightfully belongs to us! But we are asking you only to share it with us.” Said Bhim.

“It is mine! Everything is mine and I won’t share an inch! All is mine. I will bring all my brothers and sisters to fight with you all. From now it is open war between us and you can’t stop it!” Said Gaurav.

Custom Made Poetry  For Kids

Child what’s on your mind?
You are one of a kind!

Little things make you glow with pride

When left to chance

You would only sing and dance!

Won’t you like to go on a mountain hike?

Or race on a bike

For an adventurous ride?

Seek and hide,

Or hunt for treasure

At your own pleasure?

Having a mud bath in rain

Doesn’t give you any pain!

You don’t bother what friends you gather

Have them from anywhere rather!

You don’t resent their past or present

Their color or valor!

You only can make light of a fierce fight

Your soul is a pure white feather

Fear not when you wander!

The wind is your teacher

You are watched by starry eyed ancestors in the sky

And guided by the fatherly sunlight and motherly moonlight

So frolic in the secret garden

Of a faraway land

Build castles in the wet sand

Wait for them to harden

Base your dreams on a solid ground!

Life is like a merry go round

You slip and fall

Only to rise and swing above all

With bold wings of desire

You will reach all things you aspire!
